Chapter 1 Discussion

Chapter 1

I believe that conflict is an inborn trait, and it is a natural part of life for all living things. Though it is a different form of conflict in most ways, humans have conflicts just as other creatures in nature do. It is for this reason that I do not think that conflict makes us more human, but I do believe that conflict resolution does. It is human to try to find a solution and explore the reasoning behind our conflicts, and we abandon animalistic instincts to fight as a means-to-an-end. Conflict, in the case of humans, is a valuable asset because it allows us to learn new skills and recognize each other’s differences in ways of thinking. It is important to see other perspectives on an issue, and to understand how to compromise with an opposing viewpoint. Personal conflict, especially, allows for growth and reflection on one’s self which furthers self-awareness and maturity. It is vital that we as humans realize each other’s differing viewpoints, so that we can coexist and find solutions to issues that can satisfy a larger majority.
